A unique red blend from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe, the Melchum 2018 ‘El Caporal’ Mezcla de Tintos is comprised of 50% Nebbiolo, 25% Tempranillo, and 25% Merlot. While a blend of Italian, Spanish, and French varieties is seemingly uncommon, in Baja California it has become the norm to creatively intermix a multitude of these grape varieties into deliciously distinctive wines. The 2018 ‘El Caporal’ offers a nose of roasted coffee, black cherry and hints of cacao, while the palate is soft and smooth with balanced tannins, fresh acidity, and a long finish. ‘El Caporal’ is the term given to a person in charge of a group of cowboys who care for the livestock of a hacienda, and the wine was crafted to honor Daniel Sanchez’s father. Enjoy!
