Arneis [pronounced ahr-NAYZ], is a white wine grape that originated (and is still primarily grown) in the Roero hills of Italy’s southern Piedmont. It is a rare, ancient variety. Once nearly abandoned entirely by the wine world because of its difficulty to cultivate, Arneis has made a comeback in recent years. It produces excellent wines with per fumy characteristics of apples, pears, and a hint of licorice. Syndicated wine critic Bruce May says,“This exotic wine treats the senses with aromas of sweet apple, pear and almond with a hint of lime. The delicious flavors are like biting into a custard pear tart.” Well known Italian-wine writer Dick Rosano sees,“A very floral, fruity, ripe scented wine, with fresh fruit flavors, great balance.”Try it with a seafood dish such as scallop brochettes.
