Barbera (pronounced bar-BEH-rah), because of its versatility and abundant yields, was once referred to as “the people’s wine” of Piedmont, the wine region in northwest Italy from which the Barbera grape hails. Today, Barbera is one of the most exalted grapes of this rugged mountain region. Its popularity has not yet hit California like the rest of the world where, according to Decanter magazine, there are over 6500 producers. Barbera wine offers deep ruby color, luscious berry flavors, medium body and low tannin levels. “This California creation is a beauty,” says syndicated wine critic Bruce May,“with aromas of sweet ripe berry and cherry fruit with a touch of cinnamon. Rich fruit flavors dominate but are balanced with ripe tannins in the finish.” Try it with veal scaloppini or grilled Portobello mushrooms.
