Dawson Creek Winery’s 2013 Reserve Syrah comes from Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley. The climate in the Russian River Valley is similar to that of the northern Rhône Valley of France, Syrah’s ancestral home, and this Reserve bottling from Dawson Creek is stylistically very similar to the wines from this region.
Dark and aromatic, the 2013 Reserve Syrah shows off heaps of bright fruit with hints of savory spice in the same lush package. Its ripeness plays second fiddle to its fruit, and its flavors, despite their volume, have yet to begin their inevitable unwinding into greater layering and accessibility. Aromas of dried berry, pomegranate, licorice and cedar notes combine on the nose and flavors of black and red berries mix with gamy, spicy notes on the palate. Mouth-watering balanced acidity lends ample support to the dark-chocolate and cherry finish that lasts and lasts.
