Dawson Creek’s 2012 Reserve Chardonnay comes from the Sonoma Valley region of Sonoma County. After nearly 30 years of winemaking in Sonoma, winemaker Don Baker has learned many lessons about this growing region. For one, Don Baker has learned that the western and southwestern regions of Sonoma County are ideal for growing Chardonnay grapes. Here, the cool maritime influence of the Pacific Ocean arrives in the form of fog each summer evening and it maintains the bright natural acidity that is vital to the balance of world-class Chardonnays.
Light golden straw in color, this 2012 Reserve Chardonnay opens with tropical fruit notes and hints of nuanced oak. Aromas of honeyed hazelnuts and freshly-baked brioche mingle with notes of pear, lemon verbana and clove. While there is a round broadness on the mid-palate, a beam of vibrant acidity and youthful structure holds the fruit taught, balancing the soil’s signature minerality with the mature vine’s complexity. With time in the glass, floral aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle come forward.
