Cru is a French term identifying prestigious vineyards and the wines made from them, embodying the classification of select vineyard sites and their unique indigenous style – a perfectly suited name for this handcrafted brand of wines from Mariposa Wine Company. The CRU 2006 ‘Two Vineyards’ Pinot Noir, as the name suggests, comes from two vineyards: the Paraiso Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, and the Chualar Canyon Vineyard in the northern Salinas Valley. The cool Paraiso vineyard provides the delicate backbone of the wine, while the Chualar Canyon Vineyard adds layers of bright fruit and subtle tannins. Cola, black cherry and dark oak all come screaming through at first scent, with classic varietal flavors of cherry, forest oor and mushroom, with an earthy character framing everything. Red cherry fruit is accented by tightly structured tannins, which highlight the tactile impressions of nicely proportioned wine.
