After a vertical tasting of Chappellet Cabernets in 1989, Robert Parker, Jr. said, "The 1980 and 1985 look to be the best...This winery can hit the heights with its Cabernet Sauvignon."

In 1993, the Wine Spectator reported the results of a vertical tasting of twenty-one Chappellet Cabernet vintages. The 1985 vintage rated the highest of all - 93 Points. Their tasting notes found the wine, "Wonderfully exotic and rich, with great depth and length and plenty of fine tannins. It's packed with fruit flavor, accented by fig, spice and mint in the aromas, but should get even better with time."

In the publication, California's Great Cabernets, James Laube writes about the Chappellet 1985 vintage as "A very pretty wine, crisp, clean and elegant, laced with enticing, spicy cherry, currant and cedar flavors, impeccably balanced and with fine, supple tannins. This defines the Chappellet style of restrained elegance, balance, finesse and delicacy."

The wine publication, California Grapevine, reviewed the 1985 vintage in 1980, calling it, "Rich, spicy, cherry fruity aroma with notes of cedar and olives; medium-full body; well balanced and structured on the palate with concentrated Cabernet fruit flavors; medium-full tannins; lingering aftertaste...Highly recommended. First Place."

100% Cabernet Sauvignon with Cathy Corison as the winemaker.
