Londer Vineyards - Sonoma Coast

Platinum Plus selection! - 95 Points - Connoisseurs’ Guide - 91 Points, Stephen Tanzer

Londer Vineyards proves it’s never too late to follow your dreams. Owned and managed by Shirlee and Larry Londer, the small family winery is currently one of the top Burgundian-style producers in Sonoma’s Anderson Valley. Shirlee and Larry were high school sweethearts in the mountain city of Denver, Colorado, and after school and residency moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where they lived happily for 27 years. Larry was an ophthalmologist while Shirlee ran the optical shops. Outside of work, they both had an interest in wine and began joining gourmet wine clubs to help expand their collection. This “interest” took larger form when the Londers found themselves on the board of the Vintage Albuquerque Fine Wine & Art Auction team through which they made regular visits to California wineries for donations. One visit in particular changed the course of the Londers’ lives forever. Shirlee and Larry had purchased one of the auction’s donation packages to Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley and fell in love with the beautiful landscape – they knew immediately this was the place for them! It was 1997, and the Londers were about to make the biggest decision of their lives. They left their home in New Mexico, purchased a property in Anderson Valley, and made the big move to Northern California. Enlisting the help of local-winemaker Greg LaFollette, their own Londer Vineyards became a reality with the first release of 700 cases in 2001. Today, Londer Vineyards produces just about 6,000 cases, has a small vineyard on site, and they have an award-winning portfolio of wines to show for it. It’s safe to say, the move proved to be a success and the Londers’ life in the country has been exciting, enriching, and rewarding each and every day.
