Donum Estate - Napa Valley

Diamond Plus! selection - 97 Points, Wine Enthusiast - 97 Points, Pinot Report

To put it simply, this month’s Diamond Series Plus! selection, The Donum Estate, is the type of winery many other wineries would like to emulate.

Relatively young by industry standards, the Donum Estate is a carefully thought out, perfectly situated property that combines the absolute finest in grape growing with the exacting expertise of gifted winemakers. The Donum Estate is comprised of three vineyards in Carneros, Anderson Valley, and Russian River Valley, each uniquely suited to Pinot Noir and all farmed by the winery’s passionate owner/grower Anne Moller-Racke.

Since 2001, Anne Moller-Racke has been on a mission to make what some insiders have called “the perfect Pinot Noir.” She has developed a formula that most wineries simply cannot afford to employ – limiting her vineyards’ tonnage to about one ton per acre, which is well below both the Napa and Sonoma averages. She also encourages a most unique approach to winemaking, giving no set case numbers and simply asking winemaker Kenneth Juhasz to make a small amount of extraordinary Pinot Noir.

Kenneth is whole-heartedly committed to Anne’s “ultimate Pinot Noir project” and since he joined the Donum team in 2002, has succeeded in creating legendary wines of both power and elegance. The Donum Estate has consistently garnered superior accolades from the wine industry press and has become a hard item to find on a consistent basis, a fact aided by such limited production.

The word Donum literally means gift of the land, a Latin phrase that rings particularly true in the case of The Donum Estate. During its brief history, it has already set a standard that many Pinot Noir produces attempt to achieve.
