Established in 2005 by Gavin Newsom, Gordon Getty and John Conover, CADE Estate Winery is a branch of the reputable PlumpJack Winery family and was built to exclusively craft luxury, high-altitude estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley’s Howell Mountain. Always the wine enthusiast, Gavin Newsom founded PlumpJack Winery in 1995 with philanthropist and friend Gordon Getty. Gavin currently serves as Lieutenant Governor of California and was previously the Mayor of San Francisco for multiple terms. Together, Gavin and Gordon have built a dynasty in Napa Valley including PlumpJack, CADE, fine restaurants, resorts, and retail outlets. They also just recently purchased Napa’s esteemed Steltzner Vineyards & Winery and plan to release their first wine from the property in 2013. Longtime wine industry executive John Conover joined the team in 1999 and serves on the Board of Directors of The Napa County Land Trust and Napa Valley Grape Growers. The name CADE comes from Shakespeare, who used the term to refer to the wine casks – or cades – that were shipped from Bordeaux to England during Elizabethan times. Although the name may suggest a traditional, historical style of wines, CADE Winery is actually known for quite the opposite. One of the most unique, state-of-the-art wineries in Napa Valley, CADE takes a modern approach to winemaking and is actually the first organically farmed LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified estate winery in Napa Valley. In addition to this prestigious certification, winemaker Anthony Biagi ensures his wines are making just as big a statement. In contrast to the rustic, tannic Cabernet Sauvignons sometimes associated with Howell Mountain, CADE likes to call the nuanced, artisanal expression of their wines ‘Modern Howell Mountain.’ CADE’s extraordinary wines are the latest cult favorite in Napa Valley, and a tasting experience not soon forgotten.
