Buoncristiani - Napa Valley

Diamond Plus! selection - 94 Points

Buoncristiani Family Winery is about as family-oriented as possible, with four Buoncristiani brothers involved in its operation. Brothers Matt, Jay, Aaron and Nate are the winery’s founders, owners, and only employees, something that is somewhat of a rarity in today’s wine world.

The winemaking tradition in the Buoncristiani family can actually be traced back to the late 19th century to the brothers’ great, great grandfather Nonno Angelo who lived in the small town of Orentano, in Italy’s famed Toscana (Tuscany) region. In the early 1930’s, the brothers’ great grandfather immigrated with his family to the United States, bringing with him the tradition of home winemaking – a practice that has stayed a part of the Buoncristiani family ever since.

The brothers’ father, Robert, started making wines in his two-car Napa garage a number of years ago and in 1995, the four brothers started to formulate a plan. They decided to work together to attempt to produce a commercial wine that would carry the Buoncristiani family name. By 1999, the family garage had become a bonded winery, among the smallest on record in either Napa or all of California. Just two short years later, Buoncristiani Family Winery released its first 300 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Today, each of the brothers hold a definitive role in the Buoncristiani Family Winery – Matt serves as the managing partner, Jay is the winemaker, Aaron assists with winemaking and offers his artwork for the wine labels, and Nate collaborates on marketing and sales. Together, they produce a collection of stunning wines from Napa Valley and have garnered a number of prestigious accolades and awards for their efforts. The incredible success of this small family winery is a tribute to their resoluteness and indisputable desire to carry on their family’s winemaking tradition.
