Sonoma County region
The Sonoma County wine region is a sprawling area that is home to almost 60,000 acres of vineyards, 500 wineries and 16 appellations. The region is bordered by the Pacific Coast on the west and the Mayacams Mountains in the east. Sonoma is one of the largest producers in the Northern California wine country. The large number of appellations indicates the diverse climate and soil conditions in the county. In the warmer regions Zinfandels and Cabernet Sauvignons thrive and in the cooler locations Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and others flourish.
The history of wine in the region goes back to the early 1800s, where vines were first planted at Fort Ross and Mission San Francisco Solano. In 1861 the California legislature authorized a study that brought 100,000 cuttings of premium European grape varietals to the area.
Today Sonoma County wines grown in its many appellations (Alexander Valley, Bennett Valley, Carneros – Sonoma, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Fort Ross-Seaview, Fountaingrove District, Green Valley of Russian River Valley, Knights Valley, Moon Mountain, Northern Sonoma, Pine Mountain – Cloverdale Peak, Rockville, Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Valley) have earned a global reputation for excellence earning its varietals a number of international wine awards. We have featured numerous wines in five of our six wine clubs from this wine region since 1992.
