Santa Maria Valley AVA

San Luis Obispo, Central Coast

Perhaps not as well known as the nearby Santa Ynez Valley and Paso Robles wine regions, the Santa Maria Valley AVA in California has been growing grapes as far back as the Mexican Colonial period of the early 1800s. The valley benefits from its western exposure to the Pacific Ocean with a variety of elevations ranging from 200 feet to about 3,200 feet. The warm days of the region, combined with the fog-cooled evening hours, creates one of the longest growing seasons in the State.

The climate is ideal for producing outstanding Pinot Noir, Syrah, Pinot blanc and Chardonnay. The long period of ripening tends to produce complex wines with well-balanced natural acidity and intense flavors. The region has approximately 7,500 acres under vine and boasts around a dozen wineries and tasting rooms. The Santa Maria Valley AVA established in 1981, is part of the larger Santa Barbara County AVA. You will find wines from this area in our Gold Wine Club and our Pinot Noir Wine Club.
