San Luis Obispo County
A scenic and charming region spanning from oceanfront vineyards to rural backroads, San Luis Obispo (also known as SLO) seems to have it all. Dating back to the 18th century, San Luis Obispo is one of the oldest wine producing regions and has gained momentum in the last 30 years and is now recognized as one of the premier wine growing regions on the Central Coast. Although one of the smaller appellations, it encompasses two other AVA’s (American Viticultural Area): Edna Valley AVA and Arroyo Grande Valley AVA. This area is known for is small, artisan, family-owned wineries crafting top-of-the-line wines.
The climate in this region is unique due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The marine influences consist of cool morning fog, warm afternoon sun and crisp evening winds. The combination of these elements creates a long growing season and provides enough time for the grapes to fully ripen on the vine which helps add structure and complexity to the finished wines.
On account of the consistent temperature and rocky soils, SLO is an ideal growing location for numerous varietals. French varieties are widely grown in this region from Burgundian grapes, namely Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to classic Rhône varietals such as Mourvèdre, Roussanne and Syrah. While there are a number of other varieties that grow well in this region, the top grape grown in San Luis Obispo is Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot as a quick second.
The area is ideal for wine lovers and the friendly atmosphere with small town character is what sets it apart from the rest. On your next trip to this region remember to “SLO down” and don't forget to visit a few of the wineries we have featured in our various Wine Clubs over the years! A few of these include: Autry Cellars, Cal Poly Wines, Claiborne & Churchill Vintners and many more.
