Napa Valley, North Coast
The Calistoga AVA (formally established in 2010) is situated in the northern part of California’s famous Napa Valley. Calistoga has been producing high quality wine grapes since 1853. Growers in the region have volcanic soils, hot, dry summers and cool nights thanks to breezes off the Russian River. Calistoga is also the wettest of the Napa Valley AVAs with as much as 60 inches of rain per year. Currently there are around 2,500 acres of vineyard land planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Petite Sirah.
Many of the over 50 Calistoga-based wineries have come to the area in the last 10 or 20 years but there are also a number of historic wineries like Eisele Vineyard (planted in the late 1800s) that are still thriving. Today visitors to the area often make the historic town of Calistoga their home base and combine wine tasting with the areas well known mineral pool spas and volcanic ash mud baths to create a relaxing getaway. We featured Envy’s 2011 Calistoga Estate Cabernet Sauvignon in our Platinum Wine Club as well as Volker Eisele’s Cab in our Diamond Wine Club. More great wines will follow.
