Because the Diamond Wine of the Month Club is our only wine of the month club that ships quarterly there is a lot of anticipation. As always, it's worth the wait. This quarter, we bring to you the Keenan 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon from the famed Robert Keenan Winery on Spring Mountain in St. Helena region of Napa Valley. The property was a winery in the 1890's, but was abandoned in the 1930's. Purchased by Robert Keenan and restored to glory in the 1970's and 80's, Keenan became synonymous with huge, assertive wines that were rewarded by bountiful accolades and incredible press. All but for a brief time in the early 1990's, Keenan wines have continued to receive high marks, yet its new leader Michael Keenan, Robert's son, has renewed enthusiasm for the winery and vineyard and sees the future as very bright indeed. With the help of Nils Venge as a consultant winemaker, they hope to continue to produce wines like the 2004 Cabernet, which received 94+ points from Robert Parker Jr.'s the Wine Advocate and 5 out of 5 stars from Decanter magazine. This impeccably made, full-bodied, super-concentrated Cabernet reveals good delineation and freshness as well as surprising definition and elegance for a wine of such power and intensity.
The other incredible February offering from the Gold Medal Diamond Series is the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon To-Kalon Vineyard (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) from Bacio Divino Cellars. For 11 years under the watchful eye of Claus Janzen, former marketer for Caymus, Bacio Divino has been producing about 2000 cases per year of highly aclaimed wines. Translating literally to "Divine Kiss" in Italian, Bacio Divino is a synonym for the experience the blend of grapes has on the palate of anyone tasting the wine. At 90-93 points, the 2005 Cabernet should drink well for 15+ years.
