Saint Patrick's Day doesn't really scream wine, but there's no need to choke down any green liquid this year! Any number of these wines would be a perfect addition to your Irish dinner. Here are a few Irish-inspired meals and some wine pairings to enjoy them with!

Corned Beef and Cabbage

1. Corned Beef and Cabbage

Pairs with: Chardonnay or Pinot Noir

This hearty meal is not complete with out a glass of Chardonnay or Pinot Noir! There's nothing more Irish than this staple dish and both of these wine varietals can stand on their own, even when you pass around the horseradish sauce. See a few of our top choices of pairings for this dish below:

  1. Brutocao 2019 Chardonnay (Special Selction)

  2. Lynmar 2015 Chardonnay (95 Point rated)

  3. Lightpost 2018 Pinot Noir (94 Point rated)

  4. Ex Wines 2017 Pinot Noir (91 Point rated)

Shepherd's Pie

2. Shepherd's Pie

Pairs with: Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon

There's a wide variety of iterations for this recipe, but the classic beef or lamb with mashed potatoes and gravy is a warm and welcome dish! Both a Syrah and a Cabernet Sauvignon would pair wonderfully with the bolder flavors of the ground meat and add plenty of depth to the overall taste experience. The wines below are ones we would recommend from our Wine Store:

  1. Zinke Wines 2014 Syrah (only 150 cases produced!)

  2. Midnight Cellars 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (88 Point rated)

  3. Lobo 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (94+ Point rated)

  4. Kiara Bella 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Special Selection)

Bangers and Mash

3. Bangers and Mash

Pairs with: Tempranillo or Merlot

Now, don't be off put by the name...this classic plate consists of sausages and mashed potatoes and maybe even a side of peas or green beans. The subtle backbone of a Tempranillo or Merlot would be an ideal match for any type of sausage chosen. Check out the suggested wines below for a wonderful addition to your dinner:

  1. Bodega de Edgar 2017 Tempranillo (93 Point rated)

  2. Verdad Wines 2016 Tempranillo (Only 550 cases produced!)

  3. Wine Spots 2017 Merlot (92 point rated)

  4. Fattoria Montecchio 2015 Merlot (Italian Import!)

Fish and Chips in a bag with dip

4. Fish and Chips

Pairs with: Champagne, Chenin Blanc, or Sauvignon Blanc

Ah...Fish and Chips! While this is known more as an English dish, it is also a popular choice in the surrounding areas like Ireland! This one should have a lighter, crisp and refreshing white wine to pair with it. The lighter flavors of the fish and fries should not be overwhelmed by a big, bold wine. Here are some pairings that would highlight both the meal and the wine in all the right ways:

  1. Jeaunaux-Robin "Le Talus de Saint Prix" Champagne (92 Point rated)

  2. Larmandier-Bernier Premier Cru Champagne (94 Points)

  3. Tobias 2018 Sauvignon Blanc (Special Selection)

  4. Revancha 2018 Chenin Blanc (91 point rated - Argentina Import!)

Irish Stew in copper pot

5. Irish Stew

Pairs with: Red Blend, Zinfandel, or Grenache

Unlike the Fish and Chips, this one is purely Irish! This is a big, robust stew that delivers on both appearance and substance. So, you should pick a wine up to the challenge! A Red Blend, Zinfandel, or Grenache are perfect candidates and should be allowed to open up a bit before sitting down to eat. That will allow for the flavors and aromas to be at their best while enjoying this stew. Here are our suggestions for wine pairings:

  1. Rucksack 2016 Red Blend (Special Selection)

  2. Porterhouse 2016 Red Blend (94 point rated)

  3. Gamba 2018 Zinfandel (95 point rated)

  4. Crux 2015 Grenache (94 point rated)
