The focal point of Derby Wine Estates is the significance of place, and their vineyards are planted in such places to show the viticultural extremes in San Luis Obispo County. Derby’s 2010 Pinot Gris comes from the winery’s most coastal vineyard in the San Simeon region of San Luis Obispo County. Situated at just one and a half miles from the Pacific Ocean, this site is both a marvel of modern viticulture and a throwback to the days of farming at the whim of Mother Nature. It has become an excellent location for producing Derby’s Burgundian-style varieties, and especially Pinot Gris. Derby’s 2010 Pinot Gris is a deliciously light white wine that offers up fragrant, pure aromas of orange blossom, lychee, pineapple, and hints of herbs. The palate is medium bodied with a supple flavor profile that is more minerally than fruity, with hints of ruby grapefruit and pear that sneak in on the finish. A very fresh and focused wine that’s hard to resist!
