Since 1997, Tantara Winery has been dedicated to producing the very finest Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay from California’s Central Coast. Located on the beautiful Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Maria Valley, Tantara Winery focuses on crafting vineyard-designate wines from such prestigious vineyards and growers as Talley, Pisoni, Garys’ Vineyard, Laetitia, and Dierberg. Tantara Winery is a partnership between two friends and winemakers, Jeff Fink and Bill Cates, who both hale from Virginia but shared a dream of building a worldclass California winery. Fink actually designed a winery as his thesis project when graduating from UCLA in 1988, and then started dabbling with winemaking in California’s Topanga Canyon and Russian River Valley. In the mid-1990’s, a friend put Jeff in touch with Laetitia and Bien Nacido for fruit from their vineyards. The Central Coast fruit was much better than what Jeff was used to and made a far better wine than previous efforts. He called his friend Bill Cates in Virginia, who promptly moved his family out west, and they launched the Tantara label just a couple of short years later. Tantara, by the way, was named after a horse owned by Bill Cates that was once retired to pasture, but defied the odds and ended up living a long and healthy life. Horses also symbolize elegance, grace and power – all of which are qualities embraced in Tantara’s portfolio of extraordinary wines.
