Stemming from four generations of Italian immigrant farming, John Pianetta Jr.’s family has worked throughout California and has a history of home winemaking since 1914. After being introduced to vineyard farming in Lodi, California in the 1970’s, John decided that this was the route he intended to follow. In 1996, the Pianetta family purchased a 95-acre parcel in the southern Monterey County city of San Miguel, California and hired a well-respected vineyard manager, Bob Goodwin, to help them develop an ultra-premium red wine grape vineyard. Since their first harvest in 1999, the majority of the estate grapes have been sold to a renowned first-class winery, with small quantities set aside to carry on the family tradition of home winemaking. After momentous success with the grapes, the Pianetta family was inspired to start a winery of their own. The family’s first official releases in 2002 received several medals from various state and national wine competitions, and Pianetta Vineyards and Winery was off and running. A strictly reds-only producer of 100% estate varietals, Pianetta Winery represents a collective, inherited dream of four generations and with each vintage, demonstrates the family’s character and tradition.
