Morgan Winery - Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey Co

Platinum Plus! selection - 94 Points! Only 302 cases produced

Morgan Winery is the brainchild of Daniel Morgan Lee and his wife Donna, a couple with an underground success story and a reputation for world-class Pinot Noir that many consider set the standard for the Monterey County region. Coming from a small town in California’s Central Valley, Dan Lee had prepared initially for the study of veterinary medicine at UC Davis. It wasn’t until late in his college career that Dan discovered enology satisfied his interest in both science and agriculture, and he immediately enrolled in the prestigious graduate program the university had to offer. Once completing his studies, Dan was hired as winemaker at Jekel Winery in Monterey County and he knew he’d found his calling.

Dan was excited by the potential of Monterey County’s wine growing region and joined the Monterey County Winegrowers Association to further support the budding appellation. It was at one of the organization’s meetings that he met Donna, a banking advisor who would also become his wife. Together, Dan and Donna shared a dream of starting their own winery and in 1982 founded Morgan Winery in Salinas. The winery was an instant success, and what started as an underground winery being operated from the Lees’ home, turned quickly grew into a brand ranked as one of the state’s finest.

The cornerstone for Morgan Winery’s success has been the vineyard-designate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from California’s best cool-climate regions. These wines continue to garner 90+ ratings, and their tiny production numbers make them nearly impossible to find. Morgan Winery has also been named Winery of the Year by both Wine & Spirits and the San Francisco Chronicle, making it one of California’s most prized and cherished small, family wineries
