Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, wine connoisseur Fred Brander was first drawn into the wine industry while attending college and earning his masters of science degree from UC Davis. He boldly decided to start his own wine import company, focusing on wines from France and Argentina, all the while building a desire to make wines of his own. Fred also tried working for a local wine merchant and getting involved with the wine wholesale business. In 1975, Fred's longtime dream came true when he and his family established the Brander Vineyard, one of the original vineyards in Santa Barbara County's Santa Ynez Valley, where he grew up as a young child. Just two years after the winery's inception, Fred had produced a Sauvignon Blanc that heralded the first Gold Medal ever awarded to a Santa Barbara County wine by a major competition (Los Angeles County Fair). Ever since, Brander Vineyard has been highly acclaimed as a top Sauvignon Blanc producer, and for many years, the only Brander Vineyard wine was an estate-bottled Sauvignon Blanc. Now this Santa Ynez winery is also quickly gaining a reputation for their innovative Bordeaux-style blends and extremely small quantities of estate grown, single varietal red wines as they celebrate over 30 years of success on the Central Coast.
