Gold Series Features White Oak Vineyards

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Since their establishment in 1981, White Oak Vineyards of Sonoma County, California has enjoyed a reputation as one of Sonoma’s best wineries.  Not because they spent marketing dollars to get the word out, but because the quality of their wines speak for themselves.  Their wines have won the “Sweepstakes” at the Sonoma County Wine Festival twice. (In ‘90 and ‘06) This award is regarded as the most important wine award not only in Sonoma, but throughout California.

Recently, with the help of investors, Bill Myers (White Oak winery owner) acquired a unique parcel of land in Alexander Valley to expand the operation.  The property contained some sixteen acres of old vine Zinfandel that had been planted sometime during the 1920s and now houses White Oak’s new winery and tasting room, a splendid Mediterranean-inspired villa that Bill Myers designed and built almost by hand.

The new acquisition adds to White Oak’s 325-acre ranch in Sonoma’s Russian River Region that is planted entirely in Chardonnay and that produces unusually high-caliber fruit, and 420 acres in Napa Valley that is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Malbec and Syrah.

whiteoak_cab_label_thumbMyer’s goal has been to do well even in a down economy.  He has accomplished his goal and attributes this to to the fact that White Oak’s wines are perceived as exceptional values in that national and international marketplace.

Gold Medal features the White Oak Vineyards & Winery’s 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and 2005 Syrah for the most recent Gold Series wine club selection. We consider both of these wines excellent values.

Connoisseurs’ Guide awarded  this Cabernet vintage 90 points and names it a ‘best buy’. Wine & Spirits awarded the 2005 Napa Valley Syrah 90 Points.  The Syrah also received a Gold Medal from the Orange County Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition and an 88 from Connoisseurs’ Guide.

Gold Medal Wine Club is also offering the 2008 Chardonnay as a special selection wine.  As a brand new release, when the 2008 Russian River Valley Chardonnay is sent out for review in the coming months, we are confident it will garner both the attention and accolades to match those of its popular predecessors.

“When we started in Healdsburg, there wasn’t any money for marketing or anything. It was simply word of mouth and most of our customers were from the local area. I realized that if I could make wines that impressed these people who had a whole assortment of wines and wineries to choose from, I might just be able to make it. Over the years I have made some incredible friends and they have enjoyed some remarkable wines.”

We hope our Gold Medal Wine Club members will enjoy these wines as much as we have.  As always, we have a limited amount of these wines available for sale in our wine store .  Whether you are a member or not, you can order White Oak wines at discount prices (deeper discounts are available for wine club members).

Enjoy and Cheers!

Ken’s Salinas Valley Cowboy Tri Tip with Syrah.

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

The Mission Trail 2006 Syrah, (our Gold Series wine of the month club selection from a few months back) contributed this recipe for pairing with their award-winning wine. This Syrah earned a Gold Medal from the Beverage Tasting Institute’s World Wine Championships and a Gold Medal from the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, and is an excellent portrayal of the big and robust Syrahs this vineyard is capable of. This wine also garnered a Silver Medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition as well as a Silver Medal at the Florida State Fair International Wine Competition.

The Mission Trail 2006 Syrah and other Syrah wines are available for re-order in our wine store.

Ken’s Salinas Valley Cowboy Tri Tip

tri tip recipe

Ingredients:

One well marbled, Tri-Tip

The Rub:

3 tablespoons Garlic Powder

3 tablespoons Fresh Ground Pepper

3 tablespoons Kosher Salt

Mop:

1/2 Cup Red Wine

1/2 Cup Beef Broth

Smoke Chips/Chunks, oak (preferred) or fruit wood

Preparations:

Apply rub generously over both sides of the Tri-Tip. Cover with plastic wrap and allow the meat to assume room temp. Prepare your fire. The cowboys ofMonterey County would cook this meat slowly over an open fire fueled by oak logs. The smoke kisses the meat during its cooking and imparts a unique flavor. If cooking with charcoal, use indirect heat method and place wood chunks on the coals. For gas grills, use the indirect method and add wood chips to the smoke box or make a couple of tin foil packets of chips. Let the Tri-Tip cook on its side for approximately 40 minutes or until the meat appears to be cooked about half the way through and baste the meat a couple of times during that time and once right before you flip the meat to the other side. Let cook on this side for about 20 minutes or until the meat feels slightly firm or until the meat reaches an eternal temperature of 135˚. Allow the meat to rest, covered for 15 minutes. One of Tri-Tip’s greatest features is that there is a piece for everyone; the ends will be more done and the midsection will be rarer. Tri-Tip tip: It is very important to cut the meat cross grain into thin slices (1/4 to 1/2 inch thick).

This is a robust dish packed full of flavor and is needs a big full flavored wine. I found that the 2006 Syrah cozies up nicely next to this typical California Coastal dish. Enjoy! -Ken Rauh

Here at Gold Medal Wine Club, we tested this recipe and would also recommend this wonderful Tri Tip with a Petit Sirah, a Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, or Tempranillo.

Latest Platinum Series Shipment is Winner of Double Gold

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

anglim_03syrah_reserve_175_thumb1Anglim Winery on California’s Central Coast is a micro-winery run by husband and wife team Steve and Steffanie Anglim. Although Steve’s passion for wine began in the early 1970’s, he became an earnest enthusiast after being given a home winemaker’s kit for father’s day from his daughter. What started as a hobby, developed into a passion fueled by winemaking classes at UC Davis and then to a commercial venture on newly purchased land in Paso Robles. Steffanie, who holds a Masters in marketing, takes care of the operations.

Anglim (the name is Irish) Winery’s first commercial crush occurred in 2002, a total of 800 cases of Syrah. Anglim’s early efforts were all Rhône-oriented but have recently expanded to include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and other varietals. Production now stands at around 3,500 and will eventually expand to the 5,000 case level.

Numerous awards and reviews later, Anglim Winery is secure in the ranks of ultra premiere boutique wineries. “We are very determined people,” says Steffanie. “In the beginning, Steve had his cell phone number on the corks so people could reach him with comments. That speaks of his willingness to listen and improve our quality. We are both committed to doing our very best.”

Our Platinum selection this month is the Anglim Winery 2003 ‘Best Barrel Blend’ Reserve Syrah. The wine was awarded 90 Points by International Wine Review, Critics Platinum by the Critics Challenge, and a Double Gold Medal at the West Coast Wine Competition. Medium to full bodied with aromas and flavors of jammy, cherry, blackberry, currant and fig, this Syrah’s ripe fruit and silky texture create a balanced style with enough character to be cellared but enough elegance to be enjoyed now.

We hope you enjoy this month’s Platinum selection. As always, this wine is available for purchase in our wine store to our wine club members and non-members alike. Members enjoy special discounts. If you are not currently a wine club member, consider joining. You will receive regular shipments of award-winning wines and the ability to re-order these fine wines from our online wine store. For us, it’s all about quality. Gold Medal Wine Club has been selecting only the finest highly-rated, boutique wines since 1992.
