This month’s Platinum Series features Round Pond Estate 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon and Crane Brothers’ 2005 Napa Valley Merlot, both from California’s Napa Valley.
Round Pond, named for a small pond in West Point, New York, was a favorite childhood spot for Robert MacDonnell, the owner of the Napa vineyards that produce Round Pond wines. His children, Miles and Ryan MacDonnell are responsible for bringing Round Pond Estate into the ranks of upper-echelon Napa Valley wine producers.
The MacDonnell family began acquiring Napa acreage in 1980 and sold their fruit to nearby wineries including Robert Mondavi, Beaulieu and Sterling Vineyards. In the 1990′s the family began producing a small amount of wine for themselves and as gifts for friends and family. In 2001, Miles decided to enter the family into the wine making business in earnest. Learning from the customers who had bought their grapes over the years, they honed their skills in choosing specific grapes to make each wine unique. Their first release in 2002 was well received by both the industry press and consumers alike.
The Round Pond Estate winery aims to remain small, producing just 4,500 cases this year. They pride themselves with keeping it ‘all in the family’. Miles manages the winery, his sister Ryan does marketing and sales, their mother Jannine runs the tasting facility and Robert consults on all decisions regarding the winery. Round Pond Winery was recently named One of the Top 20 to Watch: Exciting Cabernet Labels in Wine Spectator magazine.
The Round Pond Estate 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted sustainably from vineyard blocks of the winery’s finest fruit. The soil and climate in Rutherford region are known as the best possible for the production of California Cabernet’s. This wine was awarded 91 points from Wine Enthusiast, named one of the Top Ten Wines of 2008 by the San Francisco Chronicle and received a Double Gold Medal at the American Fine Wine Competition.
The Crane Family of Crane Ranch Vineyard are third generation Napa Valley residents and the first generation of their family to enter into the wine industry. Thirteen years ago they acquired nine acres in the Oak Knoll appellation in West Napa Valley and contracted their spectacular fruit to Stags Leap Winery. Like the MacDonnell family, they began producing wine for themselves, friends and family to rave reviews and much encouragement. Their first production for the general public appeared in 2001 receiving similar accolades.
Michael Crane believes that the success of his wines relies on the specificity with which he handles his vineyards, deliberately producing low yields for better fruit. He personally tends to his vineyards making sure the work is done correctly. “I treat our vines the very best way possible and they reward me by delivering spectacular fruit”, says Crane. He works with winemaker Al Perry, a 25 year veteran of Napa Valley wine making. Additionally, Crane Brothers’ wines are single-vineyard, estate-bottled allowing the Cranes to hit excellent price values that consumers are looking for.
The Crane Brothers plan to stay small in order to maintain attention to detail and control over quality. There were only 140 cases produced of this month’s wine of the month club offering: Crane Brothers 2005 Napa Valley Merlot. The wine received 91 points from Connoisseur’s Guide and 90 points from Wine Enthusiast. It is described as big, rich, complex and well balanced.

The South African wine export business is an industry that has generated much enthusiasm for the international wine community in the last fifteen years. With the demise of Apartheid in the early 90′s, which kept the country’s exports highly restricted, there has been an explosion of renewed interest and a new wave of very contemporary wineries have sprung up in essentially every wine-growing region in the country. However, with wine-making traditions over 300 years old in some of these areas, many of the top producers are finding promise by straddling both the elegance of an Old World style and the more fruit-driven style of the New World.
The country’s most significant wine regions are located in the Western Cape, a location of varied topography and a moderate, Mediterranean climate, close enough to the Indian and Atlantic Oceans to give vineyards the benefit of maritime influences. An area comparable to California’s Napa Valley, and considered among the world’s most highly regarded wine producing areas, the Western Cape may be broken down into over a dozen specific wine regions. We’re happy to bring to you three excellent wines from three very promising regions from the Western Cape: Sequillo 2005 Red Blend from Swartland, Jardin 2005 Syrah from Jordan Winery in Stellenbosch, and Paul Cluver 2008 Chardonnay from Englin Valley.
Sequillo Winery was formed in 2001 by two families with a deep history in wine-making circles: the Sadie Family and the Cornet Spies Family Trust. Winemaker Eben Sadie elects to use an organic approach for the vineyard and as such, the unfiltered and non-refined wines are as natural tasting as possible. He utilizes wood barrels only to the most minimal degree, and his methods involve using cement vats to make the wines, and then ages in a variety of ancient oak barrels. The Sequillo 2005 Red Blend was awarded 89 Points by Wine Enthusiast, who cited, “The nose offers raspberry, red berry and spice, and on the palate, integrated flavors of red cherry and dark fruit, spice and minerality… Good acidity and balance, and a fresh overall character add to the interest.” It will pair well with barbecued chicken and South African Sosaties.
Jordan Winery, of the notable Stellenbosch region, is unique to South Africa for two reasons. A true “Mom & Pop”, it is the only winery in the country that is owned and operated by a husband and wife team. And secondly, the vineyard has the rare luxury of facing all directions-North, South, East and West-giving a balance that most vineyards do not have access to. Gary and Kathy Jordan developed their knowledge on wine-making while attending UC Davis in California, and returned to their South Africa home to become prominent wine-makers. Gary has received numerous awards producing under the Jordan Winery label and is steadily continuing to make his mark on the international wine scene. Wine Spectator awarded an outstanding 91 points to the Jardin 2005 Syrah, noting, “Dark and plenty fleshy, with fig, hoisin sauce, warm currant confiture and bittersweet ganache flavors that glide along fine-grained, coffee tinged tannins.” Pairs well with beef curry, lamb, or try with Braised Chicken with Peppadew Peppers.
Paul Cluvery Winery, of Elgin Valley, not only generates high quality wines, but grower Dr. Paul Cluver has been acknowledged amongst South Africa’s most respected vintners, and has become the regions most important figures in the industry. A progressive institution, the estate is partner in the first wine and biodiversity route in the area, is an active member and contributor to Thandi black economic empowerment wine producing project, promoter of eco-tourism, and is highly involved with project Slowine, an entity that empowers those “moments in between” and encourages connections amongst humans and quality over quantity, combining modernism with the best traditions from the past. A true family run business, Paul Cluver’s wines have landed both international and national acclaim and his 2008 Chardonnay was awarded 5 stars by Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2010. This classic Chardonnay erupts with aromas of citrus and floral tones with hints of pineapple, peaches, oak and toasty nuttiness. It is gentle yet complex with a long and elegant finish. Pairs well with creamy pastas, pork, salmon, or try White Fish with Fennel.
We hope you enjoy this quarter’s selection. Let us know what you think! Judge The Wines today!

Study after study has shown that screwcaps are a superior closure to traditional corks.

Why? Because cork closures make wines susceptible to oxidation and TCA, the chemical compound that creates the wine flaw known as “cork taint”. Both Conditions are bad news to wineries, particularly when it is reported that up to 5% of all wines using cork closures are flawed in this manner.
Many are hesitant to break tradition and use the screwcap because consumers have grown accustomed to the ‘romance’ of popping a cork. But even the industry leading puplication Wine Spectator has encouraged wine makers to buck tradition, “For wines meant to be drunk in a year or two, use screw caps; save the best-quality cork for top wines with aging potential.” The screw cap does not dictate the quality of the wine any more than the bottle itself does. The fruit, terrior and winemaking input determine that.
You will notice that this month’s Gold Series wine club selections from Tiera Winery have screwcaps. You will see for yourself that the screwcap is only a closure-and a good one at that!

The Tiera 2008 Dry Creek Valley Estate Grown Sauvignon Blanc, and Tiera 2006 Sonoma County Zinfandel are two excellent wines that have been named ‘best value’ by several wine publications. Gold Medal Wine Club is pleased to offer Tiera wines as this month’s wine of the month club selection.
Tiera Winery, located in the Dry Creek Valley area of Sonoma County, was started in 2001 by husband and wife team Dan Donahoe and Alexis Woods. Alexis is the daughter of Frank Woods, founder of Clos du Bois Winery. Woods saved one 120 acre parcel of land upon selling Clos du Bois which now produces the fruit for Tiera wines. Their intention is to remain small, with a goal of producing just 10,000 cases per year. This year they will probably peak at about 6000. They produce all the wine themselves.
Dan fell in love with wine and food as a freshman in college after having dinner with his grandmother’s closest childhood friend-non other than Julia Child. They were of course, treated like royalty and offered the best dishes with exquisite wines. He had an epiphany at that meal and vowed never to take food or wine for granted again! After a successful career in business, with the help of Alexis, he finally became part of the wine producing business. He and Alexis love raising their girls on the vineyard and turning people on to wines. Their mission is to produce really good wines at an accessible price point. Given that previous vintages have received 90 points and the 2007 Sauvignon Blanc earned the distinction of ‘The Top Ten Values of the Year’ , they seem to have achieved their goal.
The 2008 Sauvigon Blanc comes from Woods Vineyards grapes that are farmed sustainably and organically and was named “A Top Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc by the San Francisco Chronicle. The 2006 Zinfandel has been nominated in the American Wine Awards for Food and Wine Magazine for it’s balance and elegance.
We hope you enjoy this month’s wine club selections. Remember, you can always reorder the Tiera Sauvignon Blanc, Tiera Zinfandel, or many of our previous wine club selections from our wine store.
As always, let us know what you think. Leave a comment here, or go to ‘Judge the Wines’ and let us know what you though of this wine of the month club selection.

The Mission Trail 2006 Syrah, (our Gold Series wine of the month club selection from a few months back) contributed this recipe for pairing with their award-winning wine. This Syrah earned a Gold Medal from the Beverage Tasting Institute’s World Wine Championships and a Gold Medal from the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, and is an excellent portrayal of the big and robust Syrahs this vineyard is capable of. This wine also garnered a Silver Medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition as well as a Silver Medal at the Florida State Fair International Wine Competition.
The Mission Trail 2006 Syrah and other Syrah wines are available for re-order in our wine store.
Ken’s Salinas Valley Cowboy Tri Tip

Ingredients:
One well marbled, Tri-Tip
The Rub:
3 tablespoons Garlic Powder
3 tablespoons Fresh Ground Pepper
3 tablespoons Kosher Salt
Mop:
1/2 Cup Red Wine
1/2 Cup Beef Broth
Smoke Chips/Chunks, oak (preferred) or fruit wood
Preparations:
Apply rub generously over both sides of the Tri-Tip. Cover with plastic wrap and allow the meat to assume room temp. Prepare your fire. The cowboys ofMonterey County would cook this meat slowly over an open fire fueled by oak logs. The smoke kisses the meat during its cooking and imparts a unique flavor. If cooking with charcoal, use indirect heat method and place wood chunks on the coals. For gas grills, use the indirect method and add wood chips to the smoke box or make a couple of tin foil packets of chips. Let the Tri-Tip cook on its side for approximately 40 minutes or until the meat appears to be cooked about half the way through and baste the meat a couple of times during that time and once right before you flip the meat to the other side. Let cook on this side for about 20 minutes or until the meat feels slightly firm or until the meat reaches an eternal temperature of 135?. Allow the meat to rest, covered for 15 minutes. One of Tri-Tip’s greatest features is that there is a piece for everyone; the ends will be more done and the midsection will be rarer. Tri-Tip tip: It is very important to cut the meat cross grain into thin slices (1/4 to 1/2 inch thick).
This is a robust dish packed full of flavor and is needs a big full flavored wine. I found that the 2006 Syrah cozies up nicely next to this typical California Coastal dish. Enjoy! -Ken Rauh
Here at Gold Medal Wine Club, we tested this recipe and would also recommend this wonderful Tri Tip with a Petit Sirah, a Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, or Tempranillo.

“I work at The DiCarlo Group in Atlanta with Laura Cegala. I’ve worked with
the owner of the agency–Tim DiCarlo–for almost 10 years. We have
represented Food & Wine magazine for about five years. As a surprise gift,
Tim signed me up for the two bottles of wine a month program.
My husband and I love all the wines we have had so far! Just the idea of
knowing we will get a new delivery every month is fun. We enjoy reading
about and sharing the wine with our friends. My husband was so impressed,
he has asked me for your website and plans to give the same gift to business
clients of his.
Just wanted to share with you how much we are enjoying Gold Medal Wine Club.”
